Motion Graphics

Motion graphics is a true 21st century phenomenon that is only set to offer more and more employment opportunities in the future.  Consumer tastes and expectations have altered rapidly over the past few years, and we all now demand the most up to date technology in all aspects of our lives.  And this has led to an explosion in the need for those who are talented in fusing artistic talent with the cutting edge technological knowhow to create the motion graphics and animation that we now see all around us.  Not only are motion graphics used in many forms of advertising, but in other forms of visual communication and problem solving too.  This challenging but ultimately rewarding career path is utilized in many industries, including that of TV, film and various web based businesses.

What’s it all about?
A degree in motion graphics encompasses a large amount of skills.  You’ll of course first work towards gaining a solid base in graphic design, along with understanding the various concepts and strategies used in creating motion graphics.  Discovery of the various different media delivery will be paramount, so expect to gain a deep knowledge into the workings of various delivery methods.  These will include games, broadcasting, print, DVD, the internet and a wide variety of different interactive screen environments.  You’ll cover all the basic necessities of graphic design, including the use of color, layouts, typography, sound and audio, 2D and 3D animation and mobile device designs to name but a few.  You’ll also be taught a deeper understanding of the workings of movie trailers, commercials, music videos and film title scenes in order to give you a fully rounded and in-depth knowledge of the industry as a whole.

What will I learn?
Your degree in motion graphics will provide you with a good understanding of the complete workings of the industry.  Expect your course to include the following:

  • Graphic design basics.
  • An introduction to the psychology of how visual and audio mediums portray their messages.
  • Color theory.
  • Processing, researching and concept strategy as they apply to the marketing, advertising and commercial world.
  • Basic production practices.
  • Fine art and design.
  • 3D modeling.
  • Screen design and interactivity.
  • Video editing, pre and post-production skills.

How will I learn?
A degree in motion graphics necessitates both theoretical and practical learning.   Expect to spend a lot of your time becoming accomplished at utilizing the many industry standard applications and to undertake a lot of project based work.  In a field such as motion graphics you’ll be encouraged to experiment to discover what works and what doesn’t, as well as channeling towards developing your own individual style.  Working on projects also allows you to build your own extensive portfolio that will provide you with excellent proof of your ability when you leave university and enter the world of motion graphic employment.

After gaining my degree, what options are open to me for employment?

Once qualified there’s a whole range of different careers you can choose from.  Not only can you work directly in the field of motion graphics, but also in areas such as music video, print design, interactive design, film title design, 2D and 3D animation and web design to name but a few.  Many different companies, from small businesses right through to the giant corporations have need of those talented in motion graphics.

However, just because this is a growing industry it certainly doesn’t mean that you can afford not to do your utmost to secure your ideal job.  It’s a sad fact that in today’s society, non-degree holders simply don’t earn the same wages as those with degrees.  In fact, non-degree holders don’t stand the same chance of securing employment in the first place, with many employers not even considering hiring someone unless they have a degree in their trade.  So you owe it to yourself to become qualified in your chosen career.  Not only will it make the job search easier, it’s highly likely to make your earning capacity a whole lot more attractive.
