Sports management is not just about attending the big games, that championship fight or high level tournaments, although for the lucky few that’s definitely one of the perks of the job. What will I learn?
Sports management schools and universities all have their individual ways of presenting a syllabus. However, you can expect all courses to give you a good grounding in the following:
- A general overview of the sports industry as a whole, including the different roles of the various business opportunities and positions that are available.
- Social and ethical issues, and the law as it applies to the sporting industry
- Business skills. These will include the accounting and the financial side of the sporting business, marketing – including targeted marketing, computer applications and the use of technology as applied to the industry.
- Sales and marketing training.
- Communication, problem solving and dispute resolution.
- Team training and team dynamics.
- Sports business analysis
How will I learn?
Sports management universities use a combination of both theoretical and practical learning to prepare you for a career in the industry. Along with learning about the industry as a whole, you can expect to be given projects and scenarios to work on. These will aim to improve your critical thinking skills, and lead you towards marketing and managing in all aspects of the sporting world. Because the term “sports management” covers a broad spectrum of career options, you’ll be taught the core skills that are necessary to move into the industry at a lower level, and perhaps then choose to specialize as your education progresses. After gaining my degree, what options are open to me for employment?
After finishing your degree there are a whole host of sports management careers that become available to you. These can include such options as sports agents, coaches, scouts, recruiters and athletic directors. There are also the off-shoot positions such as sports information, sports marketers and advertising, along with venue managers, merchandising and sport licensing to name but a few career choices.
